Annual Register Online Free!

ProQuest makes The Annual Register Online free to UK public libraries for one year, as part of 250th anniversary celebrations for the publication

Cambridge, United Kingdom – June 10th, 2009 – ProQuest is pleased to offer United Kingdom public libraries a year’s free access to The Annual Register™ Online as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations for the publication.  The Annual Register is a long-established reference work, written and published each year, recording and analyzing the year’s major events, developments and trends throughout the world.  It was first written in 1758 under the editorship of the eminent philosopher and statesman, Edmund Burke, and has been produced continuously since that date.

Every year since 1758 leading contemporary scholars compiled a comprehensive record of the year’s critical events, providing an invaluable record of contemporary opinion, historical context and biographical information.  The Annual Register contains content relevant to local area research, genealogical and local history as well as information of a more general historical value.  Students studying history, politics, geography and about countries around the world will also find accurate, first-hand facts in this comprehensive reference source.

In its current form the first half of the book comprises articles on each of the world’s countries or regions, while the latter half contains articles on international organizations, economics, the environment, science, law, religion, the arts and sport, together with obituaries, a chronicle of major events and selected documents.  In addition to being produced annually in hardback, the books are also published electronically.  The entire 250-year archive will shortly be available online from ProQuest.
