The adoption of best practice in supply specification / supplier selection is one of the key recommendations for improvement in public library stock procurement identified in the MLA's Better Stock, Better Libraries (BSBL) programme, and all library services need to address this issue.

A new NAG publication, Supply Specification: Best Practice Guidelines for Public Libraries, will shortly be available - free and online at www.nag.org.uk - to provide much-needed guidance in this area.

Programme

This practical workshop builds on the popular introductory sessions held at the NAG Conference 2006 and will allow participants to:

            - identify the criteria which underpin selection decisions;

            - understand the range and role of bibliographical data;

            - explore in detail the role of the Guidelines;

            - put principles into practice by building model specifications;

            - develop strategies for controlling stock range, type, quantity and distribution;

            - identify savings in selection and acquisition costs;

            - share experience, successes, problems and solutions.

Course leader: Maggie Sumner

Maggie gained extensive practical experience of stock selection during her public library career, latterly as Bibliographical Services Officer for East Riding of Yorkshire LIS. Now a freelance researcher and consultant, she is currently working on a number of projects in this area. Maggie is the current Chair of NAG, author of Supply Specification: Best Practice Guidelines for Public Libraries, and a member of the MLA's Better Stock, Better Libraries Advisory
